What is a Project?

A project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. It has a defined beginning and end, and it is complete when its objectives have been achieved or the project is terminated. This differs from operations, which are ongoing and repetitive. Understanding this distinction is the first step in mastering project management.

Project Characteristics

Projects are: 1. Temporary - they have a defined start and end. 2. Unique - they create a new product, service, or result. 3. Progressive Elaboration - they are often completed in phases with increasing levels of detail. 4. Purpose-Driven - they are undertaken to achieve specific objectives. Recognising these characteristics helps project managers apply the right approach for each project.

Project vs Operations

While projects are temporary and unique, operations are ongoing and repetitive. Operations produce the same product or service repeatedly, while projects create something new. However, projects and operations can overlap, such as when a project creates a new process that then becomes part of operations. Understanding this boundary helps organisations allocate resources effectively.
